Wood Carving at it's best. Craftsmanship which is on the brink of extinction.

Read the story of Mr. Made Sudira. A traditional wood carving artist from Bali.

Wood Carving is one of the oldest traditional craftsmanship's in Indonesia. Furthermore it is one of the most ancient arts in Human History, it exists since the first men in prehistory, and it is considered the fundamental woodwork method.

Religion, rituals and arts have always been intimately intertwined in Bali. However, prior to 20th century, the purpose of the fine art of wood carving was purely religious. Wood panels and statuettes were not meant to decorate people’s home, as they are today. Nowadays carved designs appear in furniture design, in the building components of our homes and in the household items we use daily and as mesmerizing and beautiful decorative sculptures.

Made Sudira: "It takes years of dedication, sweat and endless hours of practice to learn & apply the skills I have learned from my Grandfather"

Carving wood by hand involves innumerous methods and tools to turn the original raw piece into a finished work of art. Wood is a very light material that can take very fine detail and it’s easier to sculpt than stone. Being an easy material to find in Indonesia's nature and due to its versatility, it was always a favorite for artisans in Bali.

This ancient art is always learnt with the experienced master artisans that pass their precious knowledge to the younger generations.

So did Made Sudira. He learned this craftsmanship from his Grandfather. Hard learned work which is on the brink of extinction. The younger generation finds it easier to work in the Hospitality Industry which offers better wages. 'But it was always his passion to create something beautiful with his hands and the resources mother nature is giving to us' Made Sudira, recalls.

It has never been so important to support this kind of art with acknowledgment which can be given in form of orders. We - the Team from 'Balicious' - want to support this traditional craftsmanship. We strive to support the work Made Sudira and his folks do, by finding new clients every day.

Retailers, Wholesalers & private consumers can make a real difference with little effort. We spread the word about those beautiful products. You place the order. And together as a team we can make this world a better place.

To end this post, here is a great saying which Balinese Artisans say: "A man who works with his hand is a labourer, a man who works with his hand and his brain is a craftsman, but a man who works with his hand, his brain and his heart is an artist".
